I enjoy your writing. “Enjoy” is not exactly accurate, since the subject matter often makes me grit my teeth. I’m SO glad to be living out of the US, as I would feel compelled also to participate there in the ways you (and many US friends and family) do. My message to you is specific to where I live, and it’s this: if the Mexican city you’re thinking of moving to is San Miguel de Allende, don’t. I can share what I know about SMA, which is a lot, and compare/contrast it to Antigua, Guatemala, which you know something about. I knew Julian pretty well here. You’d be happier here than SMA. In a recent article that I wrote, I initially included similar thoughts and discarded them. Having lived in Spain for six years, where my children grew up and share Spanish culture, we think of returning there. Spain has culture, history, beautiful countryside, friendly and social people and a terrific way of life. Difficulties are that Medicare does not apply outside the country (many nations have socialized medicine) and cultural shock can occur. An American brain does adapt easily to foreign surroundings and transporting that brain to live in an American community in a foreign land is not sensible.

I’ve looked into relocating to Canada. Trump is ruining our country, I hope the Republicans are happy. Dump Trump!
